On the day our Under 15 captain Isaac M made his 1st XI debut, his under 18 teammates Yusuf M (18) and George L (16) almost created a new Bradford Premier League record partnership. Club historian Bob Horne will no doubt be checking his records to inform whether this is an all-time club highest partnership.
For the record, Isaac’s successful debut saw him lay the foundations for his junior teammate’s onslaught scoring 13 runs in a half century opening partnership with the hard hitting Niall Lockley.
Additionally, 19 year old seam bowler Redford Holdsworth continues to benefit from his winter playing in Australia as he took 3 for 32 as Keighley were beaten by 119 runs.
Below is how the Gordon Rigg Bradford Premier League website reported on the 1st XI home fixture with Keighley.
“Teenage batters Yusuf Malik (123no) and George Leach (119) hit maiden Bradford Premier League centuries for Lightcliffe in their 119-run win over second-bottom Keighley.
Eighteen-year-old Malik and Leach (16) shared a fourth wicket stand of 248 which was just 16 runs short of the all-time league record.
Malik struck five sixes and 13 fours while Leach’s innings featured three sixes and 18 fours. Their impressive performances enabled Lightcliffe to post a total of 332-4.
Keighley replied with 213-8, skipper Simon Bailey making 60 not out and Zahir Shah (48). 19 year old Redford Holdsworth (3-32) and professional Waqas Ahmed (3-51) shared the bowling honours as the home team won by 119 runs.
5th placed Lightcliffe will be hoping their young guns will be firing again when they entertain 4th placed Scholes on Sunday, while Keighley will be hoping to secure much-needed points at home to East Ardsley who suffered a 118-run defeat against Northowram Fields.”
The 1st XI will be even more youthful today as Under 14 batsman Monty R is a late call up to the team. Monty has large shoes to fill replacing skipper Alex Stead whose injured hamstring has not improved sufficiently to allow him to play. Vice captain Andy Walker will again lead the side.
Please note that all Gordon Rigg Bradford Premier League fixtures commence at 1130 in the month of September.
