Lightcliffe’s Halifax History Boys

Lightcliffe’s Halifax History Boys

Paul Ramsden30 Aug 2024 - 14:52

Famous Five hailed as Halifax heroes!!

As we enter nine junior teams across the Bradford and Halifax Junior Cricket Leagues, plus a team in the Heavy Woollen Junior Cricket League, our boys are spoilt for choice when choosing which league to represent in the Yorkshire Junior Cricket Festival competitions. The decision is made entirely by families with LCC delighted to support whatever choice is made.

Five of our boys have played for the Halifax Junior Cricket League since the youngest Under 11 age group. The Joe Lumb competition is for Under 17s and the Halifax JCL have never won it in the 62 years it has been running, until earlier this month!!

In the semi-final, Halifax faced the Nidderdale Junior Cricket League.
Batting first, Dylan C was in first wicket down making 22 off 17 deliveries including 2 x fours and 2 x sixes. Gurdass S at 7 struck 18 off 11 with a four and 2 x sixes whilst Leo F, batting at 8, finished on 22 not out off 26 deliveries including 2 x fours when the overs ran out.
The Halfax total of 281 for 8 off 50 overs seemed daunting and it proved far too much of a challenge for Nidderdale who slumped to 88 all OT on 20.5 overs as Halifax won by 193 runs. Leo F took 1 for 21 with his left arm spin with Hari S not required to bowl in a most comprehensive victory.

The final was played at the picturesque Harden ground with the York Junior Cricket League the opposition.
York batted first and were all out for 206 off 47.1 overs. The star man with the ball was Lightcliffe’s left arm finger spinner Leo who took 5 for 49 off 23 overs including 4 maidens. One of these was to a catch by Gurdass whilst Dylan and Leo also took catches!
In reply, having missed the semi-final, our Under 15 skipper Isaac M came in at 3. He was joined by Dylan C in a 50 partnership for the 4th wicket - Dylan contributed 33 of these off just 22 deliveries striking 7 fours.
Isaac finished on 78 not out including 15 fours as Halifax eased home with 40 balls to spare - 209-4 off 43.2 overs.

All that was left to decide was the “Man of the Match” which was a two horse race between our two boys, Leo and Isaac. Either could have been chosen but the award went to Isaac.
Only Leo of the Lightcliffe lads is too old to try to defend the trophy next summer - it will be interesting to see how the other 4 boys go on and if any more of our boys get selected too!
