Bank Holiday Sunday saw Lightcliffe CC contesting 3 fixtures which is not unusual in itself for probably the busiest cricket club in Yorkshire in terms of matches played. However, as all 3 were Halifax cup finals, it was an exciting day for both young and old playing members of ‘The Villagers.’
The Under 11s were first off at midday against newcomers to the Halifax Junior League from Delph, Friarmere CC, who elected to bat first. Lightcliffe found wickets hard to come by but Friarmere found scoring even more difficult against the talented Lightcliffe youngsters. Oliver Frearson led the way with 2 for 8 as all 10 Lightcliffe fielders bowled. Under 10s Ted Stead and Caleb Waterhouse were the other wicket takers as Friarmere closed on just 66 for 4 off their 20 overs with their usually free flowing skipper Niall Grafton making 18 not out off 68 balls, indicating just how well Lightcliffe had bowled. Indeed were it not for 22 extras, Friarmere would almost certainly have totalled less than 50 on a Northowram-Shelf Hedge Top ground notorious for high scores.
Despite losing Jack Anderson to an inswinging yorker with only 11 on the board, Lightcliffe then cruised to victory. Another under 10, Lucas Arnot, opened the batting and with two 4’s and a 6 he retired on 25 not out off only 17 balls. Oliver Frearson joined captain Monty Ramsden and it was perhaps fitting in his last under 11 match that Ramsden hit the winning runs with his third boundary to finish on 20 not out. Lightcliffe’s 69 for 1 had only taken them 7.5 overs leaving them winners by 9 wickets with 12.1 overs to spare. This was Lightcliffe’s 3rd consecutive Halifax Junior Cricket League Under 11 Collinson Cup triumph. Arnot was adjudged player of the match by the umpires and as he is one of 5 of those who played eligible again next summer plus a very strong crop of under 9s coming through, Lightcliffe will take some beating again next summer when they try to retain both the Bradford and Halifax cups and leagues won this year.
The Under 13 cup final followed straight on with Copley the opponents. Winning the toss, skipper Gurdaas Singh chose to bat and despite the early loss of Isaac Morley, the runs began to flow for Lightcliffe. Three of Lightcliffe’s top four all retired not out - opener Will Eyre hit five 4s in his 33; George Leach struck six 4s and a 6 in his 21 ball 35 whilst skipper Singh hit five 4s in his 27 not out. Hari Singh and Sam Stobart both struck 16 before succumbing whilst trying to score as quickly as possible whilst Oliver Barrowcliffe was run out in the cruellest fashion when a straight drive was deflected onto the stumps by the bowler. Lightcliffe closed on 166 for 6, a formidable total at Under 13 cricket. Easaa Navazudeen took 2 for 13 for Copley with Sid Gomersall and Sameer Ayub taking a wicket apiece.
Copley were soon in trouble at 2 for 2 after 9 balls with the pace of Leach and Gurdaas Singh taking a wicket each. Lightcliffe’s Under 13s followed the lead of the Under 11s in using 10 bowlers. Richard Buckland took 3 wickets for just 2 runs, Joe Wells 2 for 4 whilst Stobart, Morley and Hari Singh all claimed a wicket apiece. Freddie Brown top scored with 18 and Sid Gomersall made 10 and with the help 22 extras Copley were all out for 57 as Lightcliffe won by 109 runs to retain the Under 13 Halifax Collinson Cup and make it a Halifax League and Cup double. Will Eyre was adjudged player of the match by the umpires with his excellent wicketkeeping being pivotal as one of Lightcliffe’s 3 retirees with the bat.
Having already won the Heavy Woollen cup, Lightcliffe Under 13s will be looking for a hat-trick of cup wins this summer when they play Great Horton Church on Sunday 12th September at East Bierley, 1030am start. Looking ahead to next summer, just as with the U11s, five of the U13s will be available again and with the addition of the graduating U11s, Lightcliffe will once again be very strong.
Throughout the afternoon, regular updates were made on the PA by Halifax Junior League chairman Phil Sharples as Lightcliffe 3rd XI were contesting their cup final. Just as the Lightcliffe junior contingent were heading off, news filtered through from Queensbury that Connor Butterworth struck the winning runs as Lightcliffe’s 3rd XI defeated Birkby Rose Hill CC to lift the Rod Warhurst Trophy for the first time for 8 years to complete a ‘Super Sunday’ for all involved at Lightcliffe CC.
